Visit counts
We count visits to learn which stories people read and how they find us. We don't use cookies for this, don't use Google Analytics or any outside tracker, and don't sell or share anything.
For each page, we record:
- the page, and on the first page of a visit, the site or campaign that sent you (like "bsky.app");
- your country, from your connection, but not your city or address;
- whether you're on a phone, tablet or computer, and which browser;
- whether you're signed in, but not who you are.
To tell visitors apart without cookies, we make a scrambled code from your connection's address, your browser and the date, using a secret. The code changes every day, so it can't be used to follow you from one day to the next, and the address itself is never stored.
While a browser tab is open, it remembers where your visit came from, so a signup during that visit can be credited to it. That's forgotten when you close the tab.
Newsletter and accounts
If you sign up or make an account, we keep your email address, the name you pick, and where your visit came from when you signed up. Your email is used only to send what you asked for: the daily briefing or sign-in links. Every briefing has a one-click unsubscribe.
